My name is Roni and I am a junior at Western Carolina University. I am majoring in geology with a concentration in hydrology. As a freshman at WCU, I was a member of the LEARN program. Through the LEARN program I have been able to gain research experience as a mentee for Gracie Erwin. I was also able to work on a research team with my old roommate and friend Dakota Little. Gracie was our mentor and we helped her map stream responses to precipitation events. As a sophomore, I worked with Dakota and we studied Concentration-Discharge relationships between headwater streams in the Gribble Gap Watershed. We collected water samples and analyzed them for trace metals. We then compared the ion concentrations to discharge. I was able to present SEGSA in the spring of 2018 and it was a great experience. As a Junior, I am still working with Dakota to continue our research on headwater streams. We want to add more to our project. I am currently planning to use the salt dilution method to measure discharge in the smaller streams. We also plan to look at the soils in the area and add that to our project to see how the soils are affecting the streams. |
